Split by car: the essentials

Dubrovnik is around 230 km south, about three hours; the Pelješac Bridge lets you drive there without leaving Croatia.
Roads, parking and ferries
The A1 is a toll motorway, while the coastal road D8 is free, scenic and slow in high season. You cannot drive into Diocletian's Palace: use the paid car parks around the old town and by the harbour. Car ferries to Brač (Supetar) and Hvar (Stari Grad) leave from the port next to the centre. Check your rental terms before taking the car on a ferry, and in summer arrive early, as queues are long.
